Get Your Run On (GYRO)

History

GYRO (Get Your Run On) was formed in the summer of 2005 in Newark, DE. While I had the group runs started my  friend, Stephanie helped with the name during some of our runs that summer. The group runs came about when I was home from college and learned my Dad was diagnosed with Diabetes. He was so sad looking on the couch and my Mom had mentioned he wasn’t too thrilled to be told his unhealthy lifestyle now caused him to take medicine everyday. I can vividly remember grabbing his hand off the couch and saying let’s go for a run. He gave me the usual rhetoric: ” I haven’t run in years” and “I have bad knees”. We hit the local park and I’m not sure how far we went that day but he said he’d give my method a shot. The goal was to slowly build up mileage and simply feel better while taking care of his body. That he did. After his next appointment with his Doctor some months later, he came home smiling. The Doctor was so impressed with his lifestyle adjustment he was able to use simple diet and exercise now to control his disease. He was forever changed by GYRO and so was I. I took the same principals and invited runners of all ages, shapes and sizes to my club. Some had been running for years others hadn’t run in years. During the runs, I encouraged them to set goals, push through the uncomfortable and stick with it.

What we do

If the name doesn’t already give us away. We run. We run slow, we run fast, we run short distances, we run long distances, we run miles, we run mailboxes, we run on trails, we run in our neighborhoods and we run together. While there are group runs throughout the week. We really strive to match runners together so you can have a partner and accountability in reaching your running goals and GYRO can be your common thread. I firmly believe that ANYONE can run. Sure, others are faster or have more endurance but anyone can run.The goal of GYRO is to encourage those who want to change their life through running. We are a running club for those who love to run and for those wanting to learn to run.

See the GYRO Website for more info, or contact Nicki for information about the local club here in Blacksburg and Christiansburg!
