Spring Engage Groups 2012

Sunday Groups

Service: We want to bring God’s justice to the world. God cares about urban poverty. He loves kids who have been unloved and wants to provide the basic needs of those who are without them. This justice includes physical and emotional needs, but also addresses the spiritual need we have to know Christ. One specific way we will be working towards bringing God’s justice is by working with the children of the United Christian Inner City Ministry in Roanoke.

Time/Location: Meeting at 3.30p outside of 130 Jackson
Contact: Brandon Thompson, Kristin Rodgers

Tuesday Groups

Throwback TV Tuesday: A group that desires to live out their relationship with God in the communities (class, work, etc) where God has placed us.  We will be focusing on growing in our relationship with God and in our relationships with the people that He has put in our lives.  Through watching some awesome throwback TV (Saved by the Bell, M*A*S*H, the possibilities are endless!), we hope to create a welcoming space to invite and connect with these people.

Time/Location: 7.30p @ Karin’s Apt.
Contact: Karin Caruso, Jeanette Staats

Lee Hall: A group focused on Christ’s love by connecting with and loving on the students of Lee Hall. This group will blend spiritual development, genuine discipleship, and honest evangelism. It will also be a time to find fellowship and accountability with other believers.

Time/Location: 7p Dinner and 8p Engage Group @ Danny’s Apt. (Lee Hall)

Wednesday Groups

Cooking/Baking: We are a group who love to cook, back, and EAT.  We get together weekly to prepare and eat dinner together while talking about God and spiritual things.  This semester, we’ll be discussing “what is the gospel?” and “what does it look like in our contexts?”

Time/Location: 6.00p @ Jenna’s Apt.
Contact: Jenna Caracciolo

International Culture: Do you get excited hearing about God moving across the nations?  Wouldn’t it be exciting to be a part of that.  We are the Engage Group for you.  Our desire is to interact with the world right here in Blacksburg, by reaching out to and having fun with the international student community.  This semester we are going to focus on “How Christ has equipped us individually to be sent out.”

Time/Location: 6.30p @ Owens (dinner), Engage Group starts @ 7.30p @ Deirdre’s Apartment

Intramural Sports: We are a community of Hokie believers who love God and intramural sports. Our focus is to reach out to those like us who enjoy playing intramural sports with a good group of friends.

Thursday Groups

Engineering: Engineering, math, and science are what we do, not who we are. Our true identity is much deeper: we are children of God and witnesses to the world around us. This is a group of God’s children and witnesses who have analysis-oriented mindsets or majors. Throughout the semester we will deeper our faith through scripture study and memorization, build a strong community of faith with each other, and reach out to the people around us who view the world through similar lenses.

Time/Location: 6.30p @ 4th Floor lounge Hypatia (Slusher Wing)
Contact: Jessica Wright, Carol Geary

TV Thursday: Community with Community: We want to build community while watching the TV show, Community, and grow together in our walks with God.  Come join us!

Time/Location: 7.30p @ Josh’s Apt.
Contact: Brie Baxley

East AJ: Our desire is to play a key part in seeing East AJ become a strong, relational community with us playing a key part. Our hope is to see students with a passion for learning take hold of an equal passion for Christ. We want to be known for loving people because of our love for Him. We want to live life together and engage each other through meals, playing games, and having fun and meaningful interactions.

Time/Location: 7.00p @ East AJ Library (6th floor)
Contact: Ross McFarlandKristal Poff, Louisa Ireland

What are Engage Groups?

  • ENGAGE each other: the scriptures make it clear that we were never intended to live our life of faith alone. We need one another to truly experience God’s full plan for our lives (Hebrews 10:24-25).
  • ENGAGE with culture: we were also never intended to live out our faith apart from the cultures we are in. Jesus came to show us how to live in the world, but not be of the world (1 Cor 9:20-23).
  • ENGAGE our faith: to Jesus, faith is as normal a part of our lives as the air we breathe and the food we eat. Together we can more fully engage our faith and see it become more real in our lives (John 6:60-69).

Engage Groups generally follow a 4-week rhythm:

Week 1: bible study, prayer, fellowship, accountability (similar to a traditional small group)

Week 2: spending time engaging with culture and with each group’s specific missional focus

Week 3: bible study, prayer, fellowship, accountability

Week 4: “Engage Together” – coming together with other engage groups for sharing, teaching, and worship
