By God’s Grace…

My name is Kevin Davis and I am a senior here at Virginia Tech, graduating in December. I have one goal for writing this story, and that is to share how God has helped me in my life, which in turn will hopefully help you, encourage you, or motivate you in some aspect of your life. I want to give you a brief background of my few years at Tech leading up to my senior year.

Freshman year, I came to VT and would pretty much just go to class, eat, study, and sleep. That’s not because I was so busy, it was just all I knew of what to do. It went by fast and I did not attend any church, even for a single service or anything. With God’s grace, I did however, get my first job as a camp counselor at a Christian summer camp near home (this is actually one of my favorite stories to tell). Sparing all the details, it was a great experience!

Sophomore year, I got more involved with my major (psychology) and got a job on campus – still no church though. The next summer I worked at a Christian summer camp again. It was a different camp, but still an awesome summer and I grew in my faith.

Junior year, I came back to Tech wanting to go to church, learn, and grow even more. However, with no good excuses, I did not go to church. Summer came along and God blessed me with one of the most amazing summers I’ve experienced. Maybe it was the kids, maybe the fact that I was simply older and more mature, or maybe because I was getting even closer with my friends… I don’t know why, but I do know God gave me that experience for a reason.

During the last week of camp, two weeks before class was going to start, my mom passed away. It was not fully expected where everyone knew it was coming, but it was not a complete accident either.

Being so close to my camp friends, it was extremely hard to leave them and come back to Tech where I knew I did not have that support from them and God in my life.

With God’s grace and a little help from Josh Johns ([nlcf] alum), the day after I got back to Blacksburg, I went to [nlcf]’s
service on Sunday. Needless to say, it was an awesome experience, and we even sang one of my favorite songs to end the service. That was exactly what I needed at the time and I knew that I had God to thank.

I kept going to the services on Sunday and also got involved with the Intramural Sports Engage Group. From the very first meeting, I felt God’s presence within our group and from the guys who were there. This group is not just a group where I look forward to meeting every Wednesday or any intramural game that we have, but these are the guys that I want to be good friends with. Without [nlcf] and the Intramural Engage Group, I do not know where I would be right now. I am an introvert and pretty shy when meeting new people, but the way they have just surrounded me with kindness and support has had such an impact on my life that I do not think I could possibly put it into words. I think the best part is the support everyone in the group has for everyone else, not just me. That is what helps me the most.

Overall, God has helped me so much through the past couple months of my life and I have so many people to thank that this note could go on for a very long time… But I’ll end with saying that no matter what pains you have in your life or no matter how far you may feel from God, if you put your trust in Him and have the desire to have Him in your life, from my own personal experiences, I can say full well that He can help you more than you could ever imagine.
